Birth registration
The birth registration takes place at the civil registry office of the municipality where your baby was born. Make an appointment with the Civil Affairs Department for this. It is mandatory to register a birth within 3 days after the delivery. If this is not possible due to the weekend or a public holiday, the registration must be done on the first working day after the weekend or holiday. If you register the birth too late, you risk receiving a fine.
To register the birth of your baby, you will need:
- A valid passport or identity card of the person registering the birth. Or a driver’s license if the person registering the birth lives in the municipality where the registration is taking place.
- A valid passport or identity card of the mother. Or a driver’s license if the mother lives in the municipality where the registration is taking place.
- Birth notification from the hospital or midwife, including the baby’s names, date of birth, and time of birth.
Sometimes it can be helpful to bring one of the following documents:
- The marriage certificate or a copy of the acknowledgment of parentage document.
- Name choice certificate if, during the acknowledgment before birth, it was determined which last name the child would receive.
