Screening

You can have a screening to determine the likelihood that your child has Down, Edwards, or Patau syndrome.

The process is as follows:

  • Your midwife will ask during the first visit if you would like to learn more about the screening. Only then can we officially explain it, and an additional appointment will be scheduled to discuss it in peace.
  • It is helpful if you prepare for this conversation in advance by reading the information at PNS.nl and filling out the decision aid “Bewust Kiezen” on this website. The NIPT brochure, at the bottom of this page, also provides a lot of information about the tests.
  • You can choose from the following test:
  • The NIPT is a screening test to detect children with Down, Edwards, and Patau syndromes. Through a blood sample, we can, with some certainty, determine if your baby is affected by one of these three conditions. We can also look at the other chromosomes (incidental findings).
  • After the conversation, you can decide whether you want to participate in the screening. Participation in the screening is voluntary and free of charge.
  • The result of the screening may lead to difficult choices. If you receive an unfavorable result and you may be pregnant with a child with Down, Edwards, or Patau syndrome, you can choose to undergo further testing to gain certainty. You can receive assistance in making this decision.
  • The result of further testing may again lead to difficult choices.

You can also receive assistance at that time.

During the first meeting with us, around 7 to 8 weeks, we will discuss your preferences regarding prenatal testing and provide more information about the different options available.
